Puddle of Mudd frontman Wes Scantlin in 2011
|
Like shooting
goateed, backwards cap-wearing fish in a barrel, it's inexhaustibly easy
to rag on Puddle of Mudd. But, with the DWI arrest of obviously troubled
frontman Wes Scantlin on Sunday in rural Minnesota, it's becoming a lot less
fun.
Fresh off a (reportedly lip-synched) set at the Halfway
Fest on Friday in Royalton, MN, Scantlin fled Renville County police at speeds
around 100 miles per hour Sunday on Hwy. 212 near Bird Island, MN, about
100 miles west of the Twin Cities, according to charges. Police managed to stop
the former rock star in his Lincoln sedan around 4 a.m., and arrested him after
his blood alcohol content at the scene measured 0.31 percent — almost four
times the legal limit. Scantlin, 43, was slurring, smelled of alcohol, and had
bloodshot eyes, according to the criminal complaint. He refused
further alcohol concentration tests after speaking with his
attorney.

Renville County Jail

Scantlin, who
posted bail Monday in Renville County District Court, faces felony charges of
fleeing police in a motor vehicle and two counts of drunken driving. "All
I can tell you is Wes is out of jail, he's on his way home, and he's playing
all of the remaining scheduled shows," Puddle of Mudd manager Chris Majors
informs City Pages. That places the troubled singer in Las Vegas on July 31 —
not exactly a hotbed of responsible decision making. Here's a timeline of
recent disturbing behavior from the post-grunge singer who scored major radio
hits ("Blurry," "She Hates Me") in the early '00s.
- Arrested for domestic violence in his hometown of Los Angeles (May 2013)
- Onstage meltdown in Dallas following lip-synching charges from the audience (April 2014)
- Arrested at Denver International Airport after being found, um, riding the baggage carousel (January 2015)
- Reportedly injured a fan during an onstage meltdown in Scottsdale, Arizona (April 2015)
- Arrested at General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee — what is it with this guy and airports? — for disorderly conduct (April 2015)
- Booed offstage at a rural Ohio venue following lip-synching charges from the audience (June 2015)
