According to documents obtained by the Baltimore Sun,
pop singer Rihanna
planned to give a
free concert to protesters in Baltimore, but would have been
stopped by the police if she tried.
In one email, a Baltimore Police officer wrote
that Rihanna’s representative reached out to the department saying
she “wants to walk with the protesters as well as perform a free concert.
He added that she will be arriving by plane and in an effort to divert
press/media she will be traveling to the city by train (or by car if
necessary).”
The officer added that Rihanna’s handlers “hoped to
secure some extra police security.” The email, one of 7,000
riot-related governmental emails obtained by the Sun,
does not reveal whether or not that protection was granted or denied and the
singer never ended up visiting the city.
But in another email sent the same day, officers warned
of a possible Rihanna concert and advised that it would be shut down because it
lacked the proper permits: “Possible Rihanna Concert at Penn &
North. No time given. Police are claiming they have no permit so it will
not be allowed.”
